Sabah and Sarawak
The states of Sabah and Sarawak are situated on the northern coast of the island of Borneo. Borneo generally conjures up images of Orang-utans and dense jungle but both states have modern cities with excellent hotels so you can return to civilisation after your adventures in the wild.
Sabah is home to the highest mountain in South-East Asia, Mt Kinabalu. This is also the main tourist attraction in Sabah and the climb is the one reason why many visitors come. Although it is intimidating in size, Kinabalu is one of the
easiest mountains in the world to climb and doesn't require any previous experience or special equipment. To reach the summit it takes two to three days but you can still visit in a day from the main city of Kota Kinabalu if you don't have the time or inclination to conquer the peak. For a more relaxed outing visit the offshore islands that make up the TAR National Park. Sarawak's main city Kuching, is aguably one of the nicest in Asia. From here you can explore the Dayak tribes who live upriver and you can even spend a night in a longhouse. Sarawak also has wonderful national parks. Bako is famous for its wildlife and most notably the rare proboscis monkey. Mulu National Park is the largest and most popular, famous for its many caves.
